A Classic Country Home In The Catskills
A curious mix of pattern and authentic texture, nostalgia and originality.
This Greek Revival home, built in 1854 has been kept alive with a brilliant interior design by Billy Cotton.
It's a refuge from the city. Somewhere to come home to and reconnect with your roots. You feel like you’re immersed in an old world that's long gone but also feels so very permanent.
I love the subtle details in this design, inspired by the classical architecture of Greek buildings throughout the Roman Empire. From the Greek columns on the porch, to the dentil detail around the kitchen island.
The mixture of patterns is genius and worth the study. Only someone with a good eye can get this right.
There's a wonderful abundance of Tunisian and Turkish carpets with old-world European wallpapers, all working together in harmony.
The secret is to stick to one colour palette for each room (2 or three colours). And then put larger patterns next to smaller scale patterns. For example, pairing a stripe with a floral.
I can't help but associate this decorating style with the Grandmillennial or Cottagecore aesthetic that's trending, particularly with the young generation. It's perhaps a reaction to the minimalist, mid-century style interiors that’ve been so prominent for the last 20 years.
This design, however, is a more sophisticated and grounded version of 'granny chic'.
I love how this home honours the past in an authentic yet interesting way. I'm all in for it.
To get the look:
You’ll need to have a passion for hunting down antique and unique pieces. Start with Facebook Marketplace and Etsy and then spend the weekends browsing local second hand stores and markets. Have fun!
