A Bohemian Family Farmhouse In Maine

Most great interiors combine a couple of different styles. It keeps it from being too cliched and boring.

I particularly love that blending of modern and traditional sensibilities. Combining contemporary furnishings with a beautiful old home's original architecture. And of course brightening everything up with white paint.

This is the family home of Katie Judkins who renovated a 1900's Dutch Colonial with her sister-in-law and interior design business partner, Heidi LaChapelle.

Take a look at what they’ve done.

You'll notice several arched doorways throughout this home. The original house came with five and they kept them all, as well as adding a sixth one between the kitchen and new mudroom.

The farmhouse kitchen is just delightful. Showcasing a row of feature windows with light sconces above, floor to ceiling subway tiles and that glorious vintage island bench.

That’s really clever. They’ve concealed the rangehood into what looks like a thick wooden shelf

Apparently Katie has “aged” the cabinet handles herself, to match the tapware. She’s given the shiny brass a patina by rubbing it with vinegar and salt.

A little desk nook, located between the mudroom and kitchen. A handy spot to drop the mail as you’re passing through and also a place to charge the devices.

The existing wood-burning fireplace gained a glass-front insert and a white oak mantel. The white painted bricks are perfect here too.

You can tell that Katie likes blue, it features in almost every room. I really like the fun-fresh feeling it creates. The colours, along with the textures used in the rugs and cushions gives it that boho relaxed vibe.

A nice contrast to the calming and traditional elements of the home.

To get the look:

  • find an old home that's got nice architectural details, such as great windows, archways, fireplaces or wooden floors

  • paint walls and trims white

  • furnish it with a mix of contemporary and vintage furniture.

  • use pops of colour and texture in the cushions, rugs and art.

  • enjoy the history of the home while while giving it a modern update
