Art Deco / P&O style home by Arent & Pyke
I'm fascinated by this home. It reminds me of Agatha Christie's Poirot, the British TV series that I’ve consumed copious amounts of (I love a good murder mystery). The series was filmed in and around many historical Art Deco buildings.
If you’re interested in immersing yourself in the Art Deco world, and you delight in watching intrigue and drama unfold for the British upper middle classes of the 1930’s, I recommend the watch.
Looking at these photos, brings me right back to that world. I wouldn’t be surprised if the bespoke display cabinet contains a snuff box of arsenic...
“It is the little grey cells, mon ami, on which one must rely” - Monsieur Hercule Poirot
I’m impressed with how they’ve paid homage to this P&O style home with it’s new renovation. Art Deco buildings were inspired by modern machine age design, and of course celebrated their beloved P&O luxury cruise liners. Which were at the height of fashion.
Although this home doesn’t have the sunburst motifs and much of the bold geometric patterns that are so iconic of the Art Deco style. It does have the curved corners and the black, white and brass palette. It has an understated sophistication and elegance. And it’s very Bauhaus modernist - which was an emerging design influence in the 30’s also.
This home’s also injected with personality using contemporary pieces of art, furniture and lighting, which I love. It was designed for a "curator" client, who obviously wanted a monochrome background on which to display their art pieces - this is very smart. The pieces can be changed around whenever they like and it wont “stuff up” the interior design.
I’ve noticed a lot of Art Deco glamour in the interior styles that are emerging lately. Or maybe I’ve just been watching too much Poirot?!
